    Default Shopping troubles

    Hi all,
I have recently moved to Sweden and while doing the general grocery a find it really difficult to find a few items. The main problem is the language since I don't know the Swedish name of things and otherwise they are hard to find. I live in Huddinge, Stockholm. So if anyone could help me in telling the names of following items and possibly where to find them:

    1. Gelatin powder (NOT the JELLY, actual granular powder which is used to make jellies, creams etc)
    2. Coco Powder (For making chocolate brownies and cakes etc)
    3. Skin Bleach creams ( They are used to lighten darker body parts, which obviously Swedes wouldn't need )
    4. Sugarcane Sugar (All I find is Beet sugar which is different in taste then Sugarcane one)
    5. Puff Pastry Powder
    6. Black Chickpeas
    7. Pomegranate Dried Seeds
    8. Self Rising Flour
    9. Full Cream Powdered Milk

And also if someone is good in baking please tell me which brand of chocolate should be used for spreading on cakes (should be sweet and not bitter)

I'll keep updating the list if I find some help here.

    Thanks for bearing with me

The answers are off the top of my head so there might be some squiggle room

    1. Swedes use a leaf of gelatin. Ask for Gelatin blad

    2. It's cocao pulver.
    3. no clue
    4. Muscavado socker is brown sugar. Light and dark available.
    5. Florsocker (I presume you mean powdered sugar)
    6. No idea
    7. Various shops have different nature food options if you can't find them among the raisin options.
    8. No clue
    9. Not sure if you can find that beyond specialty shops.

You can also find Gelatin Powder (Gelatin Pulver in Swedish)
    Most stores have it:

Thanks to all above!! Finally I found almost everything specially with the help of pictures.

One more thing, if you know about puff pastry you must know UNIPUFF is added to it. I am unable to find it. However I did find a margarine by Milda it said "mat och bakmargarin" so is it unipuff?

Also what do you call GLAZED CHERRIES here? I bought Korsbarskompott, I think I made the right choice.

I think glazed cherries would be more like cocktailbär than körsbärskompott. Körsbärskompott is more like cherry jam/marmalade.

Dr. Oetker carries cocktailbär and they look like this:

Thanks sweets, I think I'll have to return what I have already got.
Does anyone know what is a puff pastry called in Swedish?

Thanks!! Everything is just in front of my eyes but there is a huge language barrier!
Specially thanks for the pictures who helped tremendously.

Now I have another serious question which is troubling me a lot. EVERYTHING that I buy and put in the fridge grows mold on it within a few days. Cream, cheese, olives, bread all grow this green web in them after a few days. The stores aren't very close to my house so I shop at once and use it on later. But this thing isn't quite working. I am so upset today because I had to throw up a bundle just after a week of them!!

That seems odd. Are you sure your fridge is operating at the right temperature? I believe 6C is recommended, but anywhere within the range 3-8C is acceptable.

I'd empty out that fridge and give it a good scrub, you shouldn't be having that mold problem.

welcome Zoni: what an interesting shopping list! I've never heard of black chic peas, and I wonder what you would do with pomegranate seeds. What kind of cuisine are you cooking?

Traditional Indian/Pakistani cuisines. I found black chickpeas in a store so really happy on my discovery
And pomegranate seeds too, they are used in our spicy foods to add the taste.

Did that! The problem I am having is specially soft cheeses. Now I have started to put them in the freezer after opening, if not using at once.

Here are a couple of things I found on the net. The two addresses for Indian/Pakistan grocery stores were from an old link on DN, but appear on a talk forum 2009

    Indian food center, Kungsholmsgatan 15. Tel: 08-653 21 22

    Himalaya Livs, Valhallavägen 73. Telefon: 08-653 21 22
    and
    Hovslagarvägen 6
    Upplands Väsby
    Telefon: 08- 673 13 52

    Taj Mahal Livs
    Kammakargatan 40 Stockholm
    Telefon: 08- 21 22 81

You might also try the large Asian food place that sells mostly Chinese but often the Asian food stores have Indian and Pakistan foods:

I didn't find unipuff itself so just use smordeg as mentioned above by a user. Although I do see a thing called Smor in the margarine/butter section and wonder if it is unipuff. But someone authentic can guide us on that.
